What is the Ashtanga Primary Series?

 

The Ashtanga Primary Series is a structured yoga sequence developed by Indian yoga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the 20th century. This dynamic and powerful practice consists of a set sequence of yoga postures (asanas), performed in a specific order, synchronized with the breath (vinyasa) and focused gaze points (drishti).

The philosophy behind Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is rooted in the Eight Limbs of Yoga, as described by the ancient Indian sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. These include ethical principles (yamas), self-discipline (niyamas), physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), sense withdrawal (pratyahara), concentration (dharana), meditation (dhyana), and ultimate surrender (samadhi).
Through the practice of the Primary Series, practitioners aim to integrate these elements—developing physical strength, mental clarity, and spiritual connection.

Designed as a daily practice, the Primary Series gradually builds strength, flexibility, and endurance in both body and mind. It begins with Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar A & B) to warm up the body, followed by a progression of standing poses, seated postures, balancing poses, and finally, a closing sequence for rest and integration.

With regular and mindful practice, students can experience a deepening of their yoga journey, increased body awareness, and a sense of inner calm and balance.
At the same time, it’s essential to approach the practice with patience, humility, and respect for your own limits and needs—remembering that yoga is a deeply personal path that unfolds over time.

My name is Brinkela Gjokaj. Over the years, I have explored this practice by completing many teacher trainings  and making multiple trips to India. Ashtanga yoga has become an integral part of my daily life, and it has been almost a decade since I started practicing it. Through this practice, I have learned that something can be both challenging and beautiful at the same time. It has taken me on a journey of self-discovery and has helped me become the person I am today, both as a student and a teacher.

I am passionate about helping my students achieve their individual goals while ensuring their safety and emphasizing the importance of proper technique and alignment in every practice. I carefully customize my classes to meet the needs of each student, so they can progress safely through the Ashtanga series.
